Sometimes it’s BEST to just REST.

“But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head.  And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.  And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.  And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.” 1 Kings 19:4-7

Today’s Christian daily devotional

“Peggy, you’ve got to finish your broccoli before you can have a cookie.” Carla tucked the package of chocolate chip cookies on top of the refrigerator. They were now safely out of sight and reach from her three year old.

“Mommy!  No.” Peggy narrowed her eyes while her lips formed a defiantly straight line.

If it were up to little Peggy, her diet would be chock full of a nauseating combination of dyes, sugar and empty calories.

Carla straightened up in full confidence thrusting the door to her daughter’s pink bedroom open.

“That’s fine, then.  If you’re finished with lunch then that means you can get started on your nap.” Propping the door with her elbow, she motioned the three-year-old inside with a slight jerk of her neck.

“But, I don’t want a nap!  I wanna a cookie!” Peggy wailed dramatically, the knuckles of her chubby fingers gripping tightly to the kitchen table.

1 Kings 19:4-7 recounts the story of Elijah. He was a powerful prophet that stood up to the wicked King Ahab and his Queen, Jezebel.

And although Elijah was a mighty man of God, these verses remind us of the fact that he was also–very human.

Just like little Peggy, sometimes the children of God are so exhausted they don’t even know what they need.  They can’t make sound decisions because they haven’t taken the time to rest in God.

If the great prophet Elijah needed rest, I think it’s safe to say that it is crucial for believers to rejuvenate their spirits in the Lord.

God never promised to give His children all they ever wanted. But, He did say that He would supply our every need.

Do you really believe this? If you’re too stressed to, then let me encourage you to scale back on you’re busyness. Take the time you need to Rest in Him.  When you do, you will feel your trust in God grow while your fears start to melt and shrink. You’ll kick yourself for not doing it sooner!

“Dear Heavenly Father,

You said that if I lay my burdens before you that you would give me rest.

It sounded really nice, but almost impractical for my life.  I have deadlines to meet, children to feed and a household to take care of!

But, the bottom line is, I feel like I am grasping so tight onto all of them, yet they are still slipping through my fingers.

I need to breathe.  So, I am coming to you.  Today, I give you the first part of my day.  I am going to pour out my stress in prayer to you and I am going to wait expectantly for your comfort.

I know this comfort can come in a variety of forms.  It can come with your presence being felt, a need being met or just the peace that passes all understanding.  I will not have any preconceived notions in my mind on how you will meet my need.  I just know that you will.

Lord, fill my heart with joy.  Help me to look forward to my daily prayer time with you.  Help me to see that this is not a favor I am doing for you, but a blessing that you have bestowed to me.

Let me never take our times together for granted.  Even if it lasts for a mere five minutes—those five minutes will ultimately be the wisest investment that I can make for myself, my family and my relationship with you.

In Jesus’ precious name, thank you for being so patient with me, Amen.”
